A Spirit-Filled Life - SERMON NOTES
Below are Pastor Ben's sermon notes from this past Sunday, in case they may be helpful for further study. To listen to the sermon, click the link above.
Intro: (1) series recap (2 skipping sections) (3) basics of HS (cf. tesla) (4) three ministries of the HS
He helps us obey (15, 21-26): (1) after Jesus is gone the disciples will demonstrate their love for him by obedience to his commands (2) love demonstrated through action (cf. love languages) (3) examples of biblical commands → 10 commandments, sermon on the mount, “one another’s” (4) Judas’ question → one of the ways we continue to experience the Lord is through his presence with us enabling us to obey (5) this obedience only possible through the HS, who applies the teachings of Christ to our hearts (6) sailing, balloon
He keeps us connected (16-20): (1) HS introduced in v.16 → helper/comforter/counselor in place of Jesus (2) representing another in court, shouldering responsibility for them (cf. Matlock) (3) “another” Helper → same quality as Jesus (cf. paper plates vs. real plates) (4) two descriptions in v.17 → represents truth in opposition to the world, in/with us all the time (cf. cattle virtual fences) (5) v.18-19 a reference to resurrection (6) dead Jesus means no HS, and thus no connection to God → Trinity works together for our rescue (cf. helicopter team) (7) a Christian faces nothing alone
He brings us peace (27-31): (1) HS brings peace (cf. Gal. 5:22) → OT mark of Messianic age (2) def’n → content in the midst of external circumstances (cf. Philipp. 4:6-7 vs. Pax Romana) (3) attempts at peace → political, economic, job, family, convenience (4) v. 28 →ironically, peace only comes once Jesus has gone away (link back to HS) (6) they should be rejoicing for Jesus more than grieving for themselves → experience of peace directly connected to self-focus vs. Christ-focus (7) v.30-31 →reference to Satan (i.e. allusion to cross) → what looks like triumph of evil only advances God’s purposes
Conclusion: consoling flight attendant
