Resurrection Refuge

Resurrection Refuge

One of the realities for those whose faith is in Christ is that their new resurrected life is “hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3). One aspect of this “hiddenness” is that those who are united to Christ are safe and secure, hidden and protected not only in the midst of the trials and struggles of life, but also against the schemes of Satan and temptations of sin. The word that the Psalms often use to communicate this safety we have in the Lord is “refuge.” Below are six highly encouraging verses from the Psalms that remind us of our God as our refuge:

1.       Psalm 5:11-12: “But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let me ever sing for joy, and spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may exult in you. For you bless the righteous, O LORD; you cover him with favor as with a shield.”
2.       Psalm 18:1-3: “I love you, O LORD, my strength. The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies.”
3.       Psalm 31:19: “Oh, how abundant is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you and worked for those who take refuge in you, in the sight of the children of mankind!”
4.       Psalm 57:1: “Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by.”
5.       Psalm 62:5-8: “For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is in from him. He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.”
6.       Psalm 143:8-10: Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust. Make me know the way I should go, for to you I life up my soul. Deliver me from my enemies, O LORD! I have fled to you for refuge. Teach me to do your will, for you are my God! Let your good Spirit lead me on level ground!”

As we remember the resurrection of Christ in the wake of Easter Sunday, may we remember that one aspect of our resurrected life with him is that he is ever our refuge!
