Resources on God and Government
Resources on God and Government
For this week I simply want to share three resources I found helpful in preparing my sermon for Romans 13:1-7. I will provide the title, author, and a brief description of each:
God and Politics (Mark Dever)
If I had to recommend one book to buy that will provide you with a thorough but brief treatment of the Bible’s treatment of politics, this would be it. At less than 50 pages it is very readable but also does a great job of touching on the most important passages related to politics.
How the Nations Rage (Jonathan Leeman)
If the first book above is an entry-level read, this book is an intermediate-level. It’s longer (250 pages) and goes into greater depth about how Christians should think about and approach understanding politics on both a theological and practical level. If you read the book above and find yourself wanting more, this is a great place to go next.
Onward: Engaging the Culture without Losing the Gospel (Russell Moore)
Voted the book of the year by Christianity Today in 2015, this is a great book for helping American Christians faithfully represent Christ in the midst of a society that is drifting further and further from an acceptance of “traditional Judeo-Christian values.” Though it does not strictly stay within the realm of politics, it is helpful in showing how the direction of our politics affects the direction of our culture and how the Church can continue to best be a witness for Christ in the public arena.
