Families: Struggles and Blessings in Times of Trouble

Life has been anything but normal…it’s been filled with trouble! When trouble hits us from all sides, lots of things get knocked off track like our routines, comforts, plans, emotions and even our beliefs. We’re plagued with uncertainty, fears and questions we can’t answer. These troubling times can bring us face-to-face with what we really believe or hope in, whether it’s true or false. Often in times of crisis, the Lord reveals what’s true and what matters! Psalm 46 declares that God is our refuge, strength and an ever-present help in trouble. He’s ALWAYS with us!

Months ago, when our lives grinded to a halt, we scrambled to make sense of what family life looked like with no school, work or church! It was a huge adjustment! As I’ve talked with families about their struggles and blessings during the pandemic, it’s apparent that God’s been at work. A specific struggle that resonated with families was feeling isolated, alone and completely detached. These families said they thrive in community, which was much harder when Shepherding Groups, kids’ activities and Sunday Worship were cancelled. Other difficulties for parents included feeling the weight of parenting, finding personal time to refuel or helping kids with virtual learning. During all these struggles, though, God’s teaching them a deeper dependence and connectedness with Him.

Even in our troubles, families shared unexpected blessings. Parents like the slower pace, realizing they’ve been too busy. Families enjoy spending more time playing, learning and worshiping together. Many families in need were reminded they’re not alone when friends, church family and neighbors reached out to help. Families are finding new ways to have community and minister to others. Someone shared that these present troubles are a reminder this isn’t our home, heaven’s our home and that’s one of our greatest blessings!
