Foundations: Sound Doctrine - SERMON NOTES

The Book of Philippians

Intro: (1) foundations series → sound doctrine (2) “summary of the Bible’s teaching that is faithful to the Bible and useful for life” (cf. Titus 2:1-10) → rules/field in sports (3) statement of faith

Trinity (2:1-6): (1) God (Father), Christ (Son), Spirit → one God, made up of three persons, all of whom are fully God (2) why all illustrations fall short (cf. clover, water) (3) basis for community → God was never lonely

Father (1:2, 2:9-11, 4:19-20):
(1) 1:2 → source of all grace/peace (2) 2:9-11 → in charge of creation and redemption (3) 4:19-20 → all-powerful, worthy of honor (4) we are family with best dad

Son (2:5-8): (1) “form” → equal to Father (2) removed divine privileges to become human (3) obedient to point of death (4) importance of person/work (5) core of Christianity (cf. communion)

Spirit (1:19, 2:1, 3:3):
(1) 1:19 → equal to Son/Father (2) 2:1 → new identity of Christian (cf. personal and corporate) (3) 3:3 → vital for true worship (4) comforter, counselor, power source

JM

Humanity (3:7-9): (1) created to know God, be known by him (2) need “righteousness” we are incapable of (cf. Romans 5:12) (3) only made right with God through faith in Jesus, not one’s own truth (cf. ant bed)

Salvation (1:9-11): (1) v.11 → receiving Christ’s righteousness in exchange for my unrighteousness (cf. 2:8) (2) past forgiveness, present belonging (cf. 3:12), future inheritance (3) biggest problem solved

Church (1:1-2, 27): (1) no solo Christians (2) v.1 → spiritual leaders (3) v.5 → “partnership in the gospel” (4) v.7 → “partakers of grace” (5) v.27 → unity (6) next week → sound practice (cf. w in c. engaged in m.)

Scripture (2:14-16, 4:8): (1) “word of life” (i.e. gospel), “true” → God’s recorded words that point us to Jesus (2) corp worship, SS, shep group (3) spotting false via familiarity with truth (cf. counterfeit money)

Conclusion: communion → 1 Cor. 15:3-4 (cf. ant bed)
