Foundations, Prayer - SERMON NOTES
Adoration → acknowledging God’s character/attributes and expressing our love for him
● Psalm 103: (1) v.1-2 → benefits to submitting to the Lord (2) v.3-5 → forgiveness over despair (3) v.13-14 → strength in frailty (5) v.19 → connection to God’s rule over creation
● Praise His Name: (1) lights in sky, unique combos (cf. infinite yet intimate) → sovereign over all (2) creation’s groaning reflects our own, Christ’s death/resurrection creates firstfruits
● Bless the Lord O My Soul: (1) God is faithful when we are not, rescues and helps us persevere (3) the only worship that lasts into eternity (4) title → practicing self-talk to our souls
Confession → humbly acknowledging sin/shortcoming, seeking forgiveness/cleansing
● Psalm 51: (1) v.1-2 → who God is, who we are, what God can do (2) v.3-6 → specific sins, sin ultimately against God, sin because we’re sinners (3) v.7-10 → cleansing/renewal (cf. 1 Jn. 1:6-9)
● Lord I Need You: (1) v.1 → sin disrupts/misdirects (2) grace stronger than sin (3) v.3 → request for help against temptation, trust in Christ (4) chorus → answer to sin is righteousness of Christ
● Shine Into Our Night: (1) v.1 → who we are apart from Christ (2) v.2 → admission of our ongoing experience (3) chorus → image of light driving out darkness
Supplication → bringing personal needs/requests before God, interceding for others
● Psalm 90: (1) v.1-3 → God eternal, life temporary → creates wise perspective (v.12) (3) v.17 → desire to steward our life well (4) Mt. 6:9-13, Philip. 4:6-7, 1 Peter 5:6-7, Mt. 6:30-34
● Satisfy Us with Your Love: (1) v.1 → God infinite, we are not (2) v.2 → standing with God
grounded in Christ’s work (3) v.3 → life’s needs taken care of (4) daily app (cf. breathing)
● I Will Wait for You: (1) v.1-4 → God hears from darkest places (2) chorus → supplication involves waiting (3) waiting is trusting that only God satisfies our souls (cf. Psalm 131)
Thanksgiving → expressing gratitude to God for his blessings and faithfulness
● Psalm 118: (1) v.5-7 → hears/protects (2) v.13-14,18 → upholds when we’re stretched (3) v.20-21 →has brought us near through sChrist (4) v.27-28 → tangible offering to the Lord
● Rejoice: (1) v.1 → God’s love and gentleness, expressed through relationships (2) v.2 → God our shepherd (3) v.3 → remembering his past works that create hope for the future →
