Mediator, Part 1 - SERMON NOTES

The Text

  1. Fire and Food (6:8-23): (1) v.8-9, 13 --> fire from burnt offerings around the clock (2) the need for sacrifice is continual in order to experience the presence of the Lord (3) v.14-16 --> meal from grain offerings provided to priests, except for those offered during the ordination of the priests (v.22) 

  2. Blood and Bodies (6:24-7:10): (1) 6:24-25, 7:1-2, 7:7 (2) the fat offered on the altar, rest of the sacrifice eaten (3) blood had to be collected and poured/splashed on the altar (4) 17:11 --> blood signified the life of the animal and its substitutionary role 

  3. Peace and Purity (7:11-38): (1) v.11, 15-16 --> peace offerings, all three including a communal meal (2) thanksgiving a testimony of God’s goodness, vow a recognition of God’s faithfulness in the completion of a vow, freewill an expression of joy (3) v.19-20 --> purity laws applied to the meal

The Takeaways

  1. God’s holiness: (1) 7:19-21 --> sacrifices to be prepared/consumed in a particular way (2) Hebrews 10:26-29 --> passive dismissal of living unto God through the power of the Spirit is a dismissal of Christ and his work (4) reality of frustrations --> tension of lament psalms, Moses striking the rock --> being honest before God while also not forgetting his holiness  

  2. God’s presence: (1) v.13 --> Exodus 13:21 and 14:24 (pillar of cloud and fire), 19:18 (smoke on Sinai), 3:2 (burning bush), 25:31-40 (lampstand) (2) NT --> Mt. 28:20, Acts 1:8 (cf. 9:24) (3) Hebrews 4:14-16 --> God is always available (4) remembering his presence through trials --> 911 operator helping with HW 

  3. God’s leaders: (1) 6:16-18, 6:29, 7:5-8, 7:11 --> priests’ provision in all of the offerings (2) Levites given no allotment in the land, but rather called to a unique role and provision (3) NT --> 1 Cor. 9:13-14, 1 Tim. 5:17-18 (4) my appreciation to the congregation, mention of staff/elder gathering, upcoming time away
