A “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” Life

I recently watched the old movie Honey, I Shrunk the Kids with my kids. In case you’ve never seen it, the kids in the movie have a wacky scientist dad whose latest invention accidentally shrinks them down to microscopic size. When they are unintentionally thrown out with the trash and must navigate their way across the yard, they encounter all sorts of “trials of various kinds” (cf. James 1:2), from a flash flood caused by the sprinkler to fighting off a giant scorpion to almost being eaten in a bowl of cereal!

Though their experience is terrifying, one of the kids keeps reminding the others that their dad will find them, and that he will not give up until he does. And this is true. At one point the dad is even gliding around the yard on a rope and pulley, pouring over every blade of grass with his magnifying glass. He is a faithful father whose deep love for his kids is on full display.

It is good for us to have pictures like this to remind us that we too have a Father, one who does not abandon us among all of our “trials of various kinds.” Though we are not guaranteed a safe and easy path through this life, we are guaranteed the presence of a Father at all times, if our faith is in Christ. Whether you are in the flood of a sprinkler or being chased by a scorpion or floating in a bowl of cereal, remember that you have a Father who loves you and will never leave you.
