Foundations: Communion - SERMON NOTES

Where does it come from? 

  • OT meals: (1) Genesis 3:6 — forbidden fruit (2) Exodus 12:7-3 — Passover

  • NT meals: (1) Matthew 26:17, 26-29 — last supper (2) 1 Corinthians 11:23-30 — Lord’s supper (3) Revelation 19:7-9 — wedding supper of the lamb

Why is it important?

  • Vertical: (1) death of Christ (cf. 1 Cor. 11:26, Rom. 3:25) (2) participation in Christ’s death (cf. 1 Cor. 11:23-25, Mt. 26:26-27)

  • Personal: (1) John 6:35, 53-58 (2) spiritual nourishment (3) affirming my faith and Christ’s blessings

  • Horizontal: (1) unity — 1 Cor. 10:17 (2) serving and being served — 1 Cor. 12:4-7, 12-13

 
Who is involved in it?

  • Presence of Christ: (1) physical presence — Catholics, Orthodox, Lutheran (2) real presence (3) symbolic/spiritual presence — majority of protestant evangelicals (cf. corporate worship)

  • People of Christ: (1) for followers of Christ (2) self-examination (11:27-30) (3) elder-led, gathered church (cf. 11:17-18) (4) caveat for those not yet following Christ — 14:23-25
